Christmas in miniature

Virgin and Child (from MS Nn.4.1)

Virgin and Child (from MS Nn.4.1)

An additional Christmas image to complement our ‘Victorian Christmas Advent Calendar’.

This miniature of the Virgin and Child is from a sixteenth-century manuscript featured in the latest release of the Cambridge Digital Library, published today, which focuses on faith traditions—including important texts from Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism and Jainism. The manuscript, Nn.4.1, is the Benedictional of Robert de Clercq, abbot of the Cistercian monastery of Ter Duinen (‘Les Dunes’) at Kokside near Bruges from 1519 to 1557. It was illuminated by Simon Bening (1483–1561).

A ‘Medieval Christmas Advent Calendar’ next year perhaps?
