Cambridge Incunabula Masterclass – An Early Printed Herbal in Context: Illustration of the Herbarius latinus
The masterclass, entitled “An Early Printed Herbal in Context: Illustration of the Herbarius latinus”, will be led by Dr Mayumi Ikeda, Assistant Professor at Keio University, Tokyo. Her research concentrates in particular on decoration and illustration of books published by Peter Schöffer (1420-1502) at Mainz from 1457 onwards.
Dr Ikeda will discuss the illustration of plants and herbs in the Herbarius Latinus printed by Schöffer in 1484 Herbarius Latinus (ISTC ih00062000), drawing comparison with the Gart der Gesundheit, another herbal published by Schöffer the following year (ISTC ig00097000). The contrast presented by the two herbals prompts us to reconsider the use and readership of the herbal of the period. Participants will have the opportunity to have a close look at the copy of the Herbarius Latinus in the library collection.
The seminar will be held in the Milstein Seminar Room. It will start at 2.30pm and will last approximately 90 minutes, allowing time for questions and discussion. Attendance will be limited in order to allow all attendees a chance to see the book under discussion up close, and to participate in the discussion.
